Synopsis

Act 1
A Fiord By The Norwegian Coast. Captain Daland’s Is Forced By Fierce Weather To Take Shelter By The Coast. Seamen Are Carrying Fish To Ship Hold. Captain Asks The Crew To Rest; Only The Steersman Is Left On Watch. He Sings Of A Loved One Tantalizingly Close. As He Falls Asleep, A Ship Appears And Casts Anchor Next To Daland’s. It Is The Flying Dutchman’s Ship. Dutchman Has Been Condemned To Travel The Seas Forever, Returning To Land Every Seven Years, Unless He Can Achieve Salvation Through The Love Of A Faithful Woman And Marry Her. Daland Returns On Deck, Catches Sight Of The Mysterious Seaman And Wakes The Steersman. He Asks The Foreigner To Identify Himself. Dutchman Tells Him About His Ruthless Struggles In The Seas And His Wealth. To Prove This, He Shows His Bag Full Of Jewels And Asks Daland Whether He Has A Daughter. When He Gets The Positive Response, He Asks Her Hand In Marriage. Daland Readily Agrees And Invites Him To His Home. He Orders The Crew To Sail Off. Being Away From Home For Weeks, The Crew Happily Sings To Celebrate The Return.
Act 2
A Room In Daland’s House. Village Women Sing While Spinning-Wheels. Daland’s Daughter Senta, Stays At A Corner ,Oblivious Of What Is Going Around ,Eyes Fixed To The Medallion Hanging On Her Neck And To The Model Ship In Her Hands, Fantasizing The Sailor Of Her Dreams. Even The Mockings Of Her Governess And The Young Girls Cannot Cheer Her Up. Senta Discourses That, Her Fiancé Eric Is Not Of Her Concern That One Day She Will Meet The Sailor She Has Been Dreaming Of Since Years And That She Considers Herself The Sourse Of His Salvation. This Startles The Women .Meanwhile Eric Announces The Return Of Daland. Senta’s Friends Ask Eric To Tell Her About The Flying Dutchman Being Only A Legend And She Should Give Up This Passion .Eric Tells Her Of His Love And Of His Dream In Which Daland Return To Village With A Stranger, Senta Throwing Herself To The Arms Of This Stanger And Sailing Off With Him. Senta Merely Says That She Has Been Dreaming Of This Since Years, So Eric Leaves Frustrated. The Dutchman And Daland Arrives Shortly After. Senta Stunned, Gazes At The Lover In Her Dreams. Her Dreams Finally Coming True. Seeing Them Both Smitten, Daland Formally Introduces Them And Leaves. Senta And Dutchman Expresses The Yearning For Each Other. Daland Returns And Shares Their Happiness As His Daughter Is Wedding A Rich Man.
Act 3
Norwegians Are Dancing And Singing .Suddenly They Are Seized With Fright By The Uproar Of The Crew From The Dutchman’s Ship. Eric Is Bewildered By The Things He Heard Ands Reminds Senta Of The Happy Days They Spent Together .Meanwhile, The Dutchman Overhears The Conversation And Misinterprets It And Decides To Leave. Senta Frantically Tries To Convince Him That He Is Wrong. Uneffected By Her Words, Dutchman Sails Off Saying That He Will Keep On Looking For A Faithful Wife For Another Seven Years .Desolate Senta, Jumps Into The Ocean, Catching The Net Of The Boat, Disappears From Sight.


IZMIR STATE OPERA AND BALLET
Having Made The Name Of Izmir Famous In The World’s Cultural And Artistic Platform Through Qualified Works Of Opera And Ballet For A Quarter Of A Century, The Izmir State Opera And Ballet (IZDOB) Started Its Artistic Life With “Fountainside” Ballet Suite And “Storyteller’s Opera” That It Performed With Its Resident Instrumentalists On 21st October 1982. Izmir State Opera And Ballet Not Only Performs Orchestral And Performing Works But Contributes To The Proliferation Of Polyphonic Music Through Voice And Orchestra Concerts As Well.
Since The Day It Was Established, IZDOB Has Performed Approximately 50 Operas, 40 Ballets, 10 Operettas, Musical Plays And 15 Children’s Plays Which Are Exemplified Below. To Name A Few: Operas: Menotti’s Consul; Lortzing’s Czar And Carpenter; Verdi’s La Traviatta, Rigoletto, Il Travatore, Macbeth, Masquerade, Nabucco, Falstaff, Simon Boccanegra; Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, La Boheme, Tosca, Manon Lescaut; Donizetti’s Elixir Of Love, Lucia Di Lammermoor; Bizet’s Carmen; Rossini’s Barber Of Seville, A Turk In Italy; Mozart’s Abduction From The Place, Marriage Of Figaro, Magic Flute, Don Giovanni; Tchaikovsky’s Evgenii Onegin; Beethoven’s Fidelio; Ferit Tuzun’s Ears Of Midas; Selman Ada’s Ali Baba And The Forty Thieves; Offenbach’s Tales Of Hoffmann; Bellini’s Norma (This Opera Performed As An IKSEV Production During The 16th International Izmir Festival Is The Very First Opera Ever Performed In The 3500(?)-Year-Old Ancient Theatre Of Ephesus), Sabahattin Kalender’s Nasreddin Hodja; Gounod’s Faust; Wagner’s Flying Dutchman; Okan Demiris’s Yusuf And Zuleyha; Falla’s Death Of Garcilaso; Ballets: Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Don Quichote, Hurrem Sultan, Bahcesaray Fountain, Cinderella, Bolero, Ferhat And Sirin, Lady Of The Camellias, Raymonda, Esmeralda, Afife, Romeo And Juliet, La Fille Mal Gardée, Nutcracker, Three Musketeers, Swan Lake, Zhivago, A Dove’s Tale, Points Where Line Is Crossed; Operettas And Musical Plays: Merry Widow, Bat, Gipsy Baron, Chardas Furstin, My Fair Lady, Land Of The Smiles, A Night In Venice, Kiss Me Kate, Countess Mariza.
IZDOB Has Increased The Number Of Its Audience Through Such Concerts And Performances In Which Such Gigantic Works As Orff’s Carmina Burana, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mendelssohn’s St Paul, Nevit Kodalli’s Ataturk, Ahmed Adnan Saygun’s Yunus Emre, Ali Hoca’s Canakkale Canakkale, Name Of Enlightenment: Ataturk; Verdi’s And Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater Performed Each Year And Has Achieved To Perform Almost All Its Programmes On Full House Basis At Present.
Art Director Of The Izmir State Opera And Ballet Is Soprano Aytul Buyuksarac, Who Keeps This Office For The Second Time. This Office Was Kept In Preceding Years By Director Necdet Aydin, Cellist Nejat Tekebas, Baritone Altug Dilmac, Tenor Pekin Kirgiz, Soprano Selmin Gunoz, Soprano Aytul Buyuksarac, Tenor Hakan Aysev, Bass Alparslan Mater And Timpanist Selcuk Yarar Respectively.
Izmir State Opera And Ballet Has Not Only Participated In Such International Festivals As Istanbul, Izmir And Aspendus And Performed Works In Ancient Towns But Also Organised Tours To Greece, Germany, Bulgaria, Cyprus And Spain Ad Successfully Displayed The Point Reached In Polyphonic Music And Represented Our Country In The Best Way. Soloists Of IZDOB Also Receive Individual Invitations From Prominent Opera Centres Of The World And Undersign Great Achievements.
OPERA HOUSE: AN ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECE
Since Its Establishment, The Izmir State Opera And Ballet Has Been Meeting With The Lovers Of Art In The Historical Building Situated In The City Centre. Used As The Elhamra Stage At Present, This Building Is One Of The Architectural Masterpieces Of Izmir Which Is Evaluated As A Historical Work.
Started To Be Built In 1912, The Plans Of The National Cinema House And The National Library Were Drawn In 1909 By Military Architect Tahsin Sermet, Who Had Graduated From The School Of Fine Arts (Later Academy Of Fine Arts) Upon The Request Of The Governor Rahmi Arslan. The Supplementary Building Used As An Annex To The National Library For Many Years Has Been Imprinted On The Minds Of The People Of Izmir As The Elhamra Cinema House. It Was Allocated To The Izmir State Opera And Ballet As From 1980.
The Building Is One Which Bears Original And Aesthetic Characteristics Both On The Exterior And The Interior. The Building Is Covered By A Cupola. There Is Also An Elegant-Looking Weight-Bearing Dome Of Both Architectural And Aesthetic Finesse Which Mitigates The Weight Of The Cupola In The Transition From The Ground To The Cupola. On The Ground Are Three Wooden Gates With Pointed Arches Separated From One Another By Two Marble Columns. A Drip Board With A Wide Eave Over The Gate And Wooden Window Bars With Octagonal Joining Pieces Above The Drip Board.
In The Outer Middle Section Of The Wall Where The Library Meets The Opera House Is A Marble Niche With Carved Decoration Which Gives Some Movement To The Building. The Interior And Decorations Of Elhamra Are As Conspicuous As The Exterior. Lighting Of The Hall Is In Harmony With The Architecture Of The Building And Equipped With Stylised Oriental Type Chandeliers. The Large Chandelier Which Is Hung Just In The Middle Gives Some Exotic Atmosphere To Such Harmony. The Side Walls Of The Hall Are Decorated By Four Frescoes Depicting The Turkish And Occidental Spectacular Arts Which Were Made By The Artist Naci Kalmukov. The Ceiling Which Makes Up The Underside Of The Balcony Is Completely Embellished By Turkish Vignettes. The Historical Elhamra Cinema House Was Rented In 1980 By The Ministry Of Culture And Restored To Serve As A Opera House And Allocated To The Izmir State Opera And Ballet.
